Throughout recorded Chinese history there are many documented references to tea, though many are ambiguous owing to the fact that, for a long time, tea had no character of its own. Not only were several characters used to refer to tea, but the character eventually reserved for tea -"cha" (above)- originally referred to other herbs and plants as well. Below are six different characters used for "tea" up to and into the Tang dynasty (618-907).
